Permeable pavers help campus manage stormwater

Willow Creek permeable pavers are helping manage stormwater runoff at Century College in White Bear Lake, MN. To minimize runoff, the 16-acre site employs about 4,000 square feet of Willow Creek Brickstone Permeable pavers, plus porous asphalt and concrete. The surfaces direct runoff to rain gardens through which it infiltrates to underground storage chambers.

The pavers were used on islands between parking lots and around the project perimeter. The site was landscaped to comprise an interconnected system of parking and pedestrian spaces, stormwater management systems and educational features. Infiltration planters and structural soil systems for trees further enhance drainage from paved surfaces.

A Stormwater Education Island on the site features a variety of systems and technologies to reduce runoff to zero. Every drop of water from the site goes through a treatment process before draining into a wetland complex. The project cost was $3.1 million.
